Description
The Crucifix of Santa Croce is a work by Cimabue, painted for the Basilica of Croce in Florence, where it is still preserved.
Crucifix by “Cimabue” in precious olive wood, with the body of Christ in silver-plated metal, finely crafted and cared for in detail, decorated with colored enamels.
The work reflects the Byzantine style, with evident influences in the geometric shapes and the rigidity of the figures.
However, Cimabue also introduces elements of greater naturalism and realism, marking a transition towards the Gothic style.
The crucifix is characterised by a palette of intense colours, with the predominant use of silver, red and blue;
The cross features complex ornamental details, with geometric motifs decorating the ends.
On either side of the cross are images of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist, who look towards Jesus with expressions of pain and prayer.
Being a handcrafted product, the color of the olive wood may vary slightly depending on the cut.
A distinctive feature of this crucifix is the enamel work.
Entirely handmade in Italy.
