Description
Mary of Sorrows (or Mary Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Sorrows of the Seven Sorrows), in Latin Mater Dolorosa, is a title by which Christians often call and invoke Mary, the mother of Jesus. The title is based on moments in Mary's life described in the Gospels.
The symbols that best identify this image are: seven swords thrust into the heart, sometimes highlighted with a flame; a handkerchief in hand; black mourning clothing; an oval face, inclined and turned toward the sky, large eyes, a small mouth revealing the teeth, and clasped hands with intertwined fingers or open arms.
